Jacobson, Roman Osipovic
(1896-1982)
A member of the Prague linguistic circle, developing the structuralist linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure , and who argued in particular for the fundamental status of binary oppositions (see his Selected Writings, 1962 ff.). He was an important influence on Claude Lévi-Strauss and modern structuralism generally.
